The Toase District Court has thrown out the assault case involving a teacher and a female student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School.

The court was of the view that the dispute could be settled between the parties outside it and encouraged them to do so peacefully.
The case stemmed from a viral video that showed a mutual fist fight between the teacher, Eric Buernortey Apaflo, and the student at the premises of the school’s hostel. The footage ignited widespread public discussion, leading to the arrest of the teacher on Monday, June 8.
In the video, both were seen wrestling with the teacher taking the student down and repeatedly struck. Such scene prompted public outcry and concern for accountability.
During sitting, the court advised both the teacher and the student, together with their respective families, to settle the matter through reconciliation rather than continuing with legal action. As a result, the case was struck out to allow the parties to pursue an out-of-court resolution.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Professor Elvis Binney, appealed to members of the public, civil society groups, and the teaching fraternity to avoid making prejudicial remarks or issuing threats against the teacher while the matter is being resolved.
