The Deputy Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Limited has disclosed that the company sold a total of 313 buses that had become unserviceable in October 2020, with each vehicle going for GH¢2,500.
According to the Deputy MD, the buses were no longer roadworthy and had remained grounded for a long period due to severe mechanical faults. Maintaining the vehicles had become financially burdensome, prompting management to dispose of them as scrap rather than continue spending public funds on repairs.

He explained that the decision followed internal assessments which concluded that restoring the buses would cost far more than their actual value. As a result, the company opted for a sale process aimed at recovering some revenue while freeing up space at Metro Mass Transit depots.
He further stated that Metro Mass Transit continues to face challenges such as aging fleets, inadequate funding, and high maintenance expenses, which have affected service delivery over the years.
The disclosure comes amid renewed public interest in the management of state-owned transport assets, with calls from stakeholders for greater transparency and accountability in the disposal of government property.
Metro Mass Transit Limited remains one of Ghana’s key public transport operators, providing affordable transportation services across major cities and regional routes.
