Former Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng has launched a sharp critique of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing the current leadership of the party as no longer genuine.

Prof. Frimpong Boateng warned that choosing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia again as flagbearer would lead to disastrous results.

In a recent television interview, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said the NPP of today does not reflect the values and identity he once believed in and served under, calling it “fake” and suggesting that many within its ranks have strayed from the party’s founding principles.

He criticised what he views as flawed internal processes and alleged that the party’s 2023 presidential primary was manipulated in favour of Dr. Bawumia.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng went further to caution that replicating past leadership choices — specifically, re-electing Dr. Bawumia as flagbearer — could spell trouble for the party’s future prospects, describing such a move as a “trainwreck” if the underlying issues that led to the NPP’s defeat in the last general election are not properly addressed.

Despite his strong critique, the former minister has stated that he does not intend to leave the NPP, insisting that it is the “fake people” within the party who should go if the organisation is to regain its integrity.

The party’s General Secretary has rejected Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s characterisation of the NPP and its election processes. According to Justin Frimpong Kodua, the party has started processes to officially expel the Professor from the NPP.
