President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed that the government’s flagship Big Push infrastructure programme is strictly reserved for contractors with proven technical and financial capacity, stressing that the initiative is not suitable for small-scale or unqualified operators.

Speaking at the 23rd Anniversary and Thanksgiving Service of First Sky Construction on Sunday, January 25, the President disclosed that following the launch of the Big Push Agenda, several individuals contacted him in search of project allocations.

However, he made it clear that the programme was never intended for contractors who lack the expertise, equipment, and capital required to handle large-scale infrastructure works.

“When I cut the sod for the Big Push projects, we had already pre-qualified major construction firms with the capacity to deliver. Yet I received calls from all kinds of people asking for projects. I told them clearly—these projects are not for wheelbarrow contractors,” President Mahama stated.

He explained that the Big Push Agenda involves complex and capital-intensive developments that demand professionalism, advanced technical skills, and strong financial backing.

According to him, only established construction firms with demonstrated capacity — such as First Sky Construction — are qualified to participate in the initiative.

“These are proper construction companies with the capacity to deliver, and we are proud of the work First Sky continues to do,” he added.

President Mahama further noted that his administration has, over the years, implemented policies aimed at strengthening local construction companies which positioned them to be able to compete at international level.
