The Ministry of Health has initiated a comprehensive investigation into allegations of patient exploitation at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital.
The decision follows growing public concerns and reports suggesting that some patients may have been subjected to improper charges and unfair treatment while seeking medical care at the facility. According to the Ministry, the allegations, if proven, would represent a serious breach of professional ethics and government healthcare regulations.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry emphasized its commitment to protecting patients’ rights and ensuring accountability within public health institutions. Officials noted that healthcare delivery must be guided by transparency, compassion, and strict adherence to approved procedures.
Preliminary information indicates that certain individuals may have allegedly demanded unauthorized payments from patients before providing services that are ordinarily covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Some patients also reportedly claimed they were pressured into making informal payments in order to receive faster attention or essential medical care.
The Ministry of Health has therefore constituted a special investigative team comprising officials from the Ministry, the Ghana Health Service, and other relevant oversight bodies to examine the matter thoroughly. The team is expected to engage hospital management, staff members, and affected patients as part of the inquiry.
Management of Ridge Hospital has welcomed the investigation, assuring full cooperation with the authorities. Hospital officials stated that the institution does not condone any form of extortion or unethical conduct and will support all efforts aimed at uncovering the truth.
The Ministry further warned that any staff found culpable would face severe disciplinary action, including possible dismissal and referral to law enforcement agencies where necessary.
The government reiterated its dedication to restoring public confidence in the healthcare system and urged patients to report any form of abuse or exploitation through the appropriate channels.
The investigation is expected to conclude in the coming weeks, after which the Ministry says it will make its findings public and implement corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
