More than 80 residents have been displaced after a powerful tidal wave swept through the coastal community of Moree in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region, destroying at least 13 houses.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed that the incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 17.

Despite the severe destruction, no deaths or injuries were recorded.
According to NADMO, emergency officials received distress calls reporting collapsed buildings, damaged properties, and disrupted livelihoods as the raging sea invaded parts of the community.
Personnel from NADMO, National Security, the Ghana Police Service, and the District Assembly quickly moved to the area to assist affected residents and protect lives and property.
Emergency teams have since carried out rapid assessments and provided temporary shelter for those displaced by the disaster.
NADMO warned that the sea remains rough and urged residents to stay calm while authorities continue monitoring the situation and providing support.
The organisation also expressed sympathy to victims affected by the tidal wave.
The incident once again highlights the growing threat of coastal erosion and tidal waves facing several communities along Ghana’s coastline, particularly in the Central Region.
Authorities and disaster management experts are calling for long-term solutions, including stronger coastal defence projects and increased public education, to help prevent future disasters.
