Non-identical twins Michelle and Lavinia Osbourne were born just minutes apart in 1976, but a shocking DNA test revealed they have different fathers.

Lavinia discovered the truth in 2022 after taking a home DNA test. The results showed that she and Michelle are actually half-sisters, a result of an extremely rare condition called heteropaternal superfecundation, where two eggs are fertilized by sperm from two different men during the same cycle. Fewer than 20 such cases have ever been recorded worldwide.

The news was especially hard for Lavinia, who had always relied on her twin through a difficult childhood marked by foster homes and an often absent mother. Michelle, however, said she was not entirely surprised, as she had long suspected something was unusual.

Michelle had taken a DNA test earlier that year after doubting that the man they knew as James was really their father. Her results confirmed he was not. She later discovered her biological father was a man named Alex.

Wanting answers of her own, Lavinia also took a DNA test. Not only did it reveal that Michelle and she had different fathers, but it also showed that James was not her father either. Lavinia's biological father turned out to be Arthur.

Lavinia has since built a close relationship with Arthur, while Michelle was able to meet Alex, though she chose not to pursue a deeper connection.

Despite the surprising discovery, the sisters remain as close as ever. As Michelle put it, "She's my twin sister. Nothing takes away from that."
