Businessman Ibrahim Mahama has thanked former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for helping his company secure the takeover of the Damang Mine in the Western Region.
Speaking at the official ceremony on April 18, 2026, Mahama said the process took years and involved discussions with several stakeholders, including the government. The mine was transferred from Gold Fields Ghana Limited to his firm, Engineers and Planners.
He explained that the process began in 2022 when Gold Fields planned to end its operations. Government support, especially from Akufo-Addo, helped move negotiations forward.
Mahama said the deal was not just about business, but also about proving that Ghanaians can successfully manage large-scale mining operations. Before taking over, his company carried out detailed technical and financial studies and secured major funding from banks.
He also shared plans to develop the area, including building an airport within six months and improving roads to connect the mine to nearby cities.
Mahama added that profits from the mine will be reinvested into the local community, with plans to build hospitals, sports facilities, and other infrastructure. He said he even intends to build his own home in the area to show his long-term commitment.
The Damang Mine takeover marks a major shift in Ghana’s mining sector, as Engineers and Planners won the bid after the lease held by Gold Fields expired.
