Sachet Water Prices to Remain Unchanged for 2–3 Months — Producers

The National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers has agreed to keep sachet water prices unchanged for the next two to three months following a key meeting with the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry.

The association announced the price hike more than a week ago to the surprise of the public.

This decision comes after earlier signals of a possible price hike, which had sparked concern among consumers. The association had previously cited rising production costs—particularly increases in raw materials, fuel, and utilities—as reasons for the proposed increment.

One major factor behind the cost pressure is the surge in polymer prices. A tonne of polymers, which previously sold for $920, is now going for about $1,200. This sharp rise has been linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran.

Although the price increase was expected to take effect this week, producers have decided to suspend the move after discussions with government officials on April 8, led by Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare.

The decision reflects concerns about the impact higher water prices could have on households, especially since sachet water remains a major source of drinking water for many Ghanaians.

President of the association, Ebo Botwe, acknowledged that maintaining current prices will come at a cost to producers.

“We have agreed to maintain the current prices for two or three months. We will continue to monitor the situation and communicate any changes if necessary,” he said.

Government has welcomed the move and pledged continued engagement with stakeholders to find a long-term solution that balances rising production costs with consumer protection.

Minister Ofosu-Adjare commended the producers for their cooperation, noting that recent economic stability has helped cushion some of their challenges.

“The economy has been stable for a while, and producers have been supported. We commend them for maintaining prices and assure them of government support in the face of any future shocks,” she stated.

Despite holding prices steady for now, producers stress that underlying challenges in the industry remain unresolved, and further discussions will be essential in determining any future adjustments.
