A student has been arrested for allegedly withdrawing a total of GH¢24,849 from various GCB bank using stolen ATM cards, raising renewed concerns about card safety and electronic banking fraud.
According to police sources, the suspect approaches unsuspecting customers and offered to assist them with the use of ATM machine. He stands behind the victims to steal their PIN codes. The suspect then takes the card from victims and then cleverly swaps it with a different card already on him. Victims leave without noticing such fraudulent action.
The suspect then goes to another ATM machine and quickly withdraws money using the stolen victim's card.
The matter came to light after affected customers reported unauthorized deductions to GCB Bank, prompting an internal review and subsequent complaint to the police. Security camera checks and transaction tracking reportedly led investigators to the suspect, who was later apprehended.
The student is currently in police custody assisting with investigations and is expected to be arraigned before court to face charges related to theft, unlawful entry into electronic systems, and fraudulent withdrawal.
Meanwhile, GCB Bank has advised customers to remain vigilant, protect their ATM cards and PINs, and immediately report any suspicious transactions. The bank also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security systems to protect customers’ funds.
