Many Ghanaians are unaware that if they are active contributors to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), they may no longer need to worry about paying annual National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) premiums or manually renewing their membership every year.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has been working with SSNIT and the National Identification Authority (NIA) to automatically migrate and renew eligible SSNIT contributors onto the NHIS system.

Why Link Your SSNIT to NHIS?

Every month, 2.5% of SSNIT contributions are allocated to support the NHIS. As a result, active SSNIT contributors are entitled to NHIS coverage without paying the yearly premium required of many informal sector workers.

According to the NHIA, eligible SSNIT contributors whose records are properly linked can enjoy automatic renewal of their NHIS membership, ensuring continuous access to healthcare services.

Although primary healthcare services are now free for all Ghanaians without the need for active NHIS membership, according to the President and the Minister of Health in 2026, this benefit mainly covers services provided at the primary healthcare level, including CHPS compounds and selected clinics.

To continue enjoying free healthcare services beyond the primary level, including treatment at higher-level health facilities covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme, individuals are still required to maintain an active NHIS membership.

How to Link Your SSNIT and NHIS Records

1. Ensure Your Ghana Card is Linked

The Ghana Card serves as the key link between SSNIT and NHIS databases. If your SSNIT account has not been merged with your Ghana Card, visit a SSNIT office or use SSNIT's digital platforms to complete the process.

2. Confirm Your SSNIT Details

Ensure your:

  • Name matches across all records
  • Date of birth is accurate
  • Ghana Card number is correctly captured
  • Mobile phone number is updated

Any mismatch can delay the linkage process.

3. Link Your NHIS Membership to Your Ghana Card

You can do this by:

  • Dialing *929#
  • Selecting the option to link your NHIS membership
  • Following the prompts

Alternatively, visit an NHIS district office if you experience any challenges.

4. Verify Your Active SSNIT Contribution Status

The automatic renewal benefit applies to active SSNIT contributors. If your employer is not paying your SSNIT contributions or you have stopped contributing, you may not qualify for automatic renewal.

5. Wait for Confirmation

Once the systems successfully synchronize your records, your NHIS membership can be automatically renewed when it expires, provided you remain an active SSNIT contributor.

How to Check Your NHIS Status

You can check your NHIS membership status by:

  • Dialing *929#
  • Using the MyNHIS mobile application
  • Visiting the nearest NHIS office

Important Things to Note

Not all NHIS members automatically qualify for this arrangement. The benefit is primarily for active SSNIT contributors whose records have been properly linked through their Ghana Card.

If you have changed your name, phone number or other personal details, it is advisable to update both your SSNIT and NHIS records to avoid problems.

As Ghana moves towards a more integrated digital identity system, the Ghana Card is increasingly becoming the primary identification document for accessing both SSNIT and NHIS services.

    Good morning,
I have been a member of the NHIS since its inception, with a renewal in 2014 when an update was done with my SSNIT details. For a few years, we paid discounts on renewals, but that stopped, so we renewed in full. My Ghana Card, SSNIT, and NHIS IDs have all been merged, yet we still renew in full, contrary to “How to Link Your SSNIT to NHIS for Automatic Annual Renewal in Ghana (2026 Guide).” What might be the challenge, and how do we resolve it?.
