Ghana is currently experiencing what health authorities describe as a generalised HIV epidemic, according to the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), prompting serious concern among public health officials.
Officials have highlighted that recent testing data reveal rising rates of HIV infection across the population, not only among specific high-risk groups but broadly throughout communities nationwide.
According to NACP figures, infections are no longer confined to small groups or regions but have spread widely enough to classify the epidemic as generalised — meaning the virus is circulating significantly within the general population.
Caroline Adonadga, Head of Prevention, Counselling and Nutrition at the NACP, spoke about the new data on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV, stressing the urgency of the situation and the need for renewed focus on prevention and treatment efforts.
While specific national statistics were not detailed in her remarks, recent estimates from national HIV surveillance reports show that Ghana recorded over 15,000 new HIV infections in 2024, with more than 330,000 people currently living with the virus. Women continue to account for the majority of new infections, highlighting gendered vulnerabilities in the epidemic.
The NACP’s declaration underscores the pressing need for enhanced testing, prevention education, and expanded access to care to control the spread of HIV and curb its impact on Ghanaian communities.
