We all know Joseph's story. But let's take a moment to really think about it. One day, Joseph was a beloved son, and the next, he found himself sold off as a slave in a foreign land. Imagine how abandoned by God he must have felt. And then, in the middle of all that, along comes Mrs. Potiphar. Now, let’s not be naive—army officers tend to marry beautiful wives, so it’s safe to say Mrs. Potiphar was no exception. And she was persistent with her request—it wasn’t one-time.
You and I both know that the man who keeps Madam “happy” often holds more power than the master himself. Plus, at this point, Joseph had no clue what his future held—no hint that he’d one day become Prime Minister of Egypt. So it seems the situation was rigged for Joseph to accept to become Mrs. Potiphar’s “side boy” so why didn’t Joseph just say, “Medaase Madam” and enjoy life in that house? Imagine! If he had gone along with her, he would have lived comfortably—no prison, no suffering. So why didn’t he? – He just feared God without any expectation of a future reward. And the fear of God preserved not just his life but his destiny, ensuring that he became everything God had ordained him to be.
And then there was Gehazi, the servant of Elijah If things had gone differently, Gehazi may have inherited Elisha’s mantle, not Elisha. But Gehazi made a choice. He went behind his master’s back to “sort himself out” with a “thanksgiving offering” from Naaman after Elisha had declined it. And to make things worse, he lied about it. Gehazi chose the comfort of today over the destiny of tomorrow, and in doing so, he may have lost his place in God’s plan.
Often, because we don’t see the future, we chase and grab whatever comfort we can find in the present and by any means possible—“secure the bag” we say. Seeking today’s comfort. But today’s comfort is nothing compared to the glorious destiny God has planned for tomorrow.
Even if your path doesn’t lead to becoming “Prime Minister,” and even if the reward isn’t immediately visible, trust that your relationship with God is worth more than any temporary gain. Don’t Compromise.
Aim for a life of destiny according to God’s will and purposes for you. And let the fear of God help you make choices today with that in mind. Don’t sacrifice tomorrow’s destiny for today’s comfort.
Be Joseph. Destiny mindedness over comfort.
