A former ally of former President J.J. Rawlings under erstwhile PNDC regime Sgt. Rtd. Alolga Akata Pore, has urged President Akufo-Addo to be cautious with his public statements ahead of the 2024 polls.
Earlier this month, President Akufo-Addo stated publicly that he "cannot hand over power" to John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer.
Speaking on JoyNews' UpFront on Wednesday, May 15, Mr. Akata Pore voiced concern over recent remarks made by politicians, notably the President.
The president, during a mini-rally in Doboro made such statement to affirm his support for the vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia.
His statement was widely criticized as undemocratic and inflammatory owing to the possible heightened atmosphere surrounding the up-coming election in December.
Mr. Akata Pore adding his voice, stressed on the dangerous implications of such public utterances coming from the president.
"Some of the intemperate languages of the politicians don’t help. You have the President saying that he will not hand over power if Mahama wins the elections because he will come and destroy his achievements. You don’t crack jokes like these if you are a President," he stated.
He further cited another statement made earlier by President Akufo-Addo, where he was reported to have said he would "do everything in his power to make sure that Bawumia wins."
He admonished politicians to be circumspect in their political utterances and make sure peace is maintained during and after the polls.
