The vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who doubles as the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) flagbearer for election 2024 has walked back his earlier comment of paying churches rather than taxing them.

This followed backlash from many citizens, including political opponents accusing him of saying anything just for votes.

Dr. Bawumia delivered his views during a meeting with clergy members in the Bono East area on May 10, highlighting the importance of collaborating with churches for national development.

On May 13, during a meeting with religious members in the North East Region as part of his nationwide trip, the Vice President clarified he was taken out of context and that the comment was only made for fun.

He went on to explain that his remarks could have been misinterpreted.
"I made that statement within the context of acknowledging the significant contributions of churches and other faith-based institutions to the country, including the construction of schools, hospitals, and other vital infrastructure," stated. Dr. Bawumia.
