Today May 10, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry arrived in Nigeria as part of their first formal overseas tour since resigning from their royal positions in 2020.
On Friday morning, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were seen landing at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. The highest-ranking military officer in the African nation, the Chief of Defense Staff, extended an invitation to the pair.
The visit follows Harry’s recent trip to the U.K. to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. He invited his close family members for a service at St. Paul’s Cathedral but they failed to show up; these include his father King Charles, brother Prince William, and sister-in-law Kate Middleton.
Meghan, 42, who did not accompany her husband to the U.K., joined him later, and they traveled together to Nigeria.
The Chief of Defense Staff will meet with the couple at a school on Friday morning. They are also scheduled to visit wounded service members at a military hospital in the afternoon and to attend a training session for Nigeria Unconquered on Saturday as well as a reception honoring military families.
The Duchess of Sussex said in a 2022 edition of her podcast Archetypes that she discovered through a genealogical test 43% of her genetic makeup was Nigerian.
While in Düsseldorf, Germany for the Invictus Games the previous year, Meghan and Harry made time to talk to the Nigerian team.
