Majority of us know about the term ‘menstruation/ period’, because it is the change that is most visible.

4 Stages in Menstrual cycle

There are four distinct phases/stages in menstrual cycle and menstruation is just one of them. There are three other complex phases that occur within and not physically shown as in monthly flow of blood-period. In fact, you can liken menstrual phase to the handling of wastes of digestion which is passing of stool after complex process of digestion of food substances invisibly within the GIT (gastrointestinal tract). They are; follicular phase, ovulation and luteal phase.

Follicular Phase.

This is the stage where the female egg is produced in the ovary. A structure called follicle contains immature eggs called ova. Over time, an egg matures and this takes us to the next stage called ovulation.

  Luteal Phase

This is the stage that brings about menstruation/period. The preparations made in the first two stages are not permanent. After some time, once no sperm was available to fertilize the egg for implant in the womb, the lining in the womb must disintegrate and flow out of the body. What you see during menstruation is not only blood, but a mixture of blood, fluid and disintegrated endometrial cells. This change is also brought about by powerful reproductive hormones’ actions.
