Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, the member of parliament for Tamale South constituency and former minority leader is claiming that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is influencing the way the Electoral Commission (EC) is handling requests for an audit of the voter registration.

The MP alleged the NPP was responsible for the Electoral Commission’s refusal to hire a third party to do a forensic audit of the voter roll. He spoke on Hot Issues of TV3 Ghana on September 22.

“Have you seen somebody running in a market who hasn’t stolen? In a market, you see somebody running in the midst of people, it means there’s something wrong. Why are you running? Let the Electoral Commission live up to its calling as an independent commission, independent of government, independent of political manipulation, including the ruling New Patriotic Party,” he said to Keminni, the host.

He claims the reason the Commission is evading calls to remove the foreign items from the register is because it is hiding something. The former Minority Leader added that not only the NDC but also Ghanaians in general will reject the Commission’s alliance with the government in order to maintain the NPP in power.

His remarks come in response to the Electoral Commission’s refusal to carry out an audit of the voter registration, which the NDC has labelled unfit for purpose.

While the EC refuses to offer proof of the corrections it claims it made after the anomalies were brought to light, the NDC is requesting that the Commission hire a third party to perform a forensic audit, claiming there are more illicit transfers.
